REHOME
Helpful, judgement-free tips & resources for rehoming your pet.

PLEASE NOTE: Outsiders Farm & Sanctuary is currently at full capacity and is not accepting new animals of any species at this time.

IF YOU ARE REHOMING YOUR PET BECAUSE YOU CANNOT AFFORD PET FOOD OR VET CARE, PLEASE REACH OUT TO US AT WALTSWORLD@OUTSIDERSFARM.COM FIRST.

  • Between 2020 and 2022, Outsiders Farm & Sanctuary responded to an unprecedented volume of emergency intakes, particularly pigs, many of whom came from last-resort situations. Pigs are a lifelong commitment, often living 15–20 years, and accepting them means committing to decades of daily care, medical oversight, enrichment, and specialized housing.

  • In addition to our pig residents, our sanctuary is home to dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, goats, cows, ducks, chickens, and a common snapping turtle, each species with unique needs, space requirements, and medical considerations. Capacity is not determined by land alone, but by our ability to provide individualized, high-quality care to every animal who already calls Outsiders home.

  • At this time, our physical space, staffing, foster availability, and financial resources are fully committed to the animals already in our care. With very tight resources, it is critical that we remain focused on maintaining the highest standard of care for every resident rather than expanding beyond what can be responsibly supported.

  • Until we are able to place adoptable foster animals into appropriate homes and open suitable, species-specific enclosures, Outsiders Farm & Sanctuary will remain closed to new intakes and fosters across all species.

This pause is necessary to honor our commitment to the animals we have already promised to protect, for their entire lives.

Responsible Rehoming Safety Tips

If you are seeking to rehome an animal, please take extra care to ensure their safety and long-term well-being:

  • Never offer animals for free. Rehoming fees help deter individuals with harmful intentions and encourage serious, responsible adopters.

  • Ask questions. Inquire about housing, prior animal experience, veterinary care plans, and who will be the primary caregiver.

  • Request a veterinary reference when possible, and confirm that current pets are spayed/neutered and up to date on care.

  • Meet adopters in person and trust your instincts. If something feels off, it’s okay to say no.

  • Avoid public drop-offs and unsafe handoffs. Ensure animals are transferred securely and humanely.

  • Use written agreements. Even a simple rehoming contract can help set expectations and protect the animal.

  • Spay and neuter when possible before rehoming to prevent further overpopulation.

  • Be cautious with online listings. Never share your home address publicly, and avoid vague or evasive inquiries.

Rehoming responsibly can take time, but patience helps protect animals from neglect, exploitation, and repeat displacement.
